Portugal’s top flight since March 12, the Primeira Liga, was on pause owing to the coronavirus pandemic. The league has been confirmed to make a comeback on June 4.
After Portugal, Spain’s La Liga is aiming to return from their suspension on June 12. If spectators were earlier wondering Spain was too hasty, they might be shocked by Portugal now.
Last month, the country’s prime minister, Antonio Costa, gave the league the go-ahead to restart behind closed doors from May 30 and the league has now announced it would continue playing only a few days late.
The 25th round of fixtures will take place from June 4, Liga Portugal announced in a statement.
It also declared: “Different entities have conducted successive alignment meetings over the past few days so that the recovery can take place safely and with all the protection measures that mitigate the risks of returning to the activity.
“To ensure that the stadiums are strictly inspected and that medical tests are carried out on all professionals involved in the games and their organisation, the date for the first game of the 25th round of the Liga NOS is scheduled for June 4, 2020.”
