Paolo Maldini, one of the best football defensive players of all time, selected his most loved teammate in Milan. “It’s Marco van Basten.”
The legendary Italian said, in praise of van Basten, “He could score right, left, head … He was so strong and so fast, able to score and play. He was the best. The way he played football was timeless.”
He went on, “He had to stop playing. when he was 28 because of ankle surgery. It was such a pity.” He stated, recalling Milan from 1991 to 1994, “Back then, Milan was the strongest. Big names came every year. Gullit, Tassotti, Van Basten, Massaro, Boban, Papin, Savicevic. Well, that wasn’t normal!”
Hailed as the favourite captain, Maldini spent his entire career in Milan from 1984 to 2009, playing 902 games and scoring 33 goals.
Meanwhile, Van Basten played for Ajax from 1981 to 1987, after which he was in Milan until 1995 and interrupted his career. He scored 125 goals for the Rossoneri in 201 games.
