Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stated that the current transfer window would be a “different world” owing to the financial consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The landscape now is different than when it was two months before. We have to change, evolve, there are teams out there who are suffering financially more than anyone. It’s a modern environment, so I believe that this summer’s transfer market would be completely different than what everyone assumed it will be,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
As teams across Europe are bracing for huge financial losses owing to playing games without supporters in the stadium and, in certain situations, seeing seasons completely cancelled, the summer transfer market is shaping up to be much different than in previous years.
Big investment is likely to be curtailed, although transfers of free agents and trade transactions are predicted to acquire popularity while teams seek to boost their teams cheaply.
Solskjaer saw his team linked with deals of huge money for a number of stars, including Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho, but he stated he was unsure how the game will continue in the face of so much uncertainty.
“We’re still trying to strengthen the team,” he said. “The chaos in the world today, nobody knows how sport and the economy would be so I’m very pleased with the group I’ve received.”
Despite the endless search for replacements on his team, Solskjaer suggested he would not actually be unhappy if the likes of Sancho or Grealish were not brought in due to the amount of talent already accessible to him.
“This season, I think Mason [Greenwood], Anthony [Martial] and Marcus [Rashford] were great, scored up to 50 goals between them.” the Norwegian said. “Marcus got his fracture, even Anthony on path for his best season, and Mason is of course just a special talent with his goal-scoring skill.”
