Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire has shared his belief that Manchester United would need to be “mentally strong” to return to the top, while confirming his intention to collect trophies in the coming years.
“As a Red, our biggest enemy is definitely ourselves.” Maguire said during a MUTV Q&A. “I’d agree we’ve possibly let ourselves down as a squad at times this year by being a little more illogical.”
He went on, “There were moments where we were so competitive in play, and then we fell down a little and got disciplined. Therefore, I would say that we are our biggest enemy.
“We need to be powerful, mentally. We are a community of young people so we just don’t want to use it as an excuse. We want to be young but we want to stay mature. That’s where we were really picked up over the last few weeks.”
Since making a historic £80 million (roughly equal to 99 m dollars) transfer from Leicester last year, Maguire has agreed to a six-year deal at Old Trafford, becoming the world’s most expensive player.
Since then, the 27-year-old has justified his price tag by helping turn the Red Devils once again into a strong defensive force, forming a powerful relationship with Victor Lindelof at the back.
The player acknowledges the reality that United in the first half of the season was still too unpredictable, but thinks promising indicators of improvement were seen in 2020.
