Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain admits that he wishes to end his career with River Plate with Marcelo Gallardo, despite being currently focused on playing for Juventus.
“My head is here, [in Turin]”, the 32-year-old said to TyC Sports.
Higuain is now back in Turin but has only a year left on his contract with Juve and spent the first phase of the coronavirus pandemic in Argentina, even holding a web-seminar for River’s youth.
‘Pipita’ began his career with the Buenos Aires club before joining Real Madrid in January 2007, scoring 15 goals in 41 appearances:
“River is a club that gave me everything, from letting me develop to buying me from Real Madrid, but I don’t know what’s going to happen right now.
He is not denying his desire to one day come back:
“The Gallardo team is very exciting, they have the quality, the strength, all [of it]…
“The truth you are watching them and their No 9 is getting lots of chances. Clearly there is someone who played for River before watching that team, seeing themselves there and saying, ‘how nice.’
“Gallardo caught the eyes of everyone and he earned it. I would have thought of going back to River to retire.”
For their part, River won the 2018 Copa Libertadores and finished runners-up in last year’s Flamengo competition.
