Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant revealed how he consoled captain John Terry following their missed cent-back goal in the shoot-out when they fell to Manchester United in the 2008 Champions League final.
He told The Sun: “As I hugged John, I said, ‘I’m never going to think about our first conversation and how you’ve helped the team pull out of a tough situation.’
“We were really unlucky, we deserved to win, but not just because of ‘deserve’. If Lampard scored when he hit the bar in extra time, it would have been one of the most spectacular goals in a final – but this is history, huh?”
He admitted he was asking Terry to be sure of himself then. He also remarked on his own coaching style:
“Jose likes to be the center of all, the star, in a good way. I’m the director of a movie — the stars are the players.”
