It is already known that German Burgos will depart his role as Diego Simeone’s assistant coach at the end of the current campaign.
Now it appears that Gabi Fernandez will replace the former goalkeeper on the Atletico Madrid bench.
Rafa Sahulquillo, Radio MARCA’s editor-in-chief, announced on Monday afternoon that Gabi will be taking the role of assistant coach from the start of next season.
Gabi doesn’t have his full coaching badges yet. But that won’t be a problem for him to become a key member of Simeone’s new-look backroom team, including Nelson Vivas too, once his contract with Al-Sadd expires on June 30.
Meanwhile, after leaving Atleti, Burgos intends to begin his career as a coach in his own right.
This then leaves Simeone with a gap in his coaching staff. Having represented Los Colchoneros for several years, Gabi remains a favourite. He is a fan and club icon, as well as has a strong relationship with Simeone.
Simeone has complete confidence in the Spaniard following his time as captain, and while Gabi’s representative, Manolo Garcia Quilon, denied the speculation, time will tell if the pair will continue their relationship once again in a professional capacity.
