Five players in Spain’s top two football divisions have been tested positively for coronavirus, La Liga reported.
Despite Spain being one of the European countries hardest affected by the pandemic, a return to training and a potential resumption for football tournaments in the 2019-20 season was declared. Ahead of this return, both professional footballers in La Liga and Segunda Division were tested. Five have tested positive.
An official statement said: “Specifically, five positive cases have been identified in players between the La Liga Santander (first division) and the La Liga SmartBank (second division) teams, both asymptomatic and in the final step of the illness. Exact players La Liga does not know in compliance with data security regulations.”
La Liga has reported that five players screened positively, but they are all asymptomatic. Two names are being kept secret in compliance with Spain’s data security laws, while Real Betis has confirmed infection of Joel Robles, Alfonso Pedraza and Juanmi Jimenez.
The teams will still be put in isolation and will be checked to see whether they are still infected over the following days. La Liga confirmed they will give tests to the impacted players’ families as well.
