Iker Casillas has voiced disappointment about the manner in which he said farewell to Real Madrid, where he vowed to return eventually.
“I have never thought about quitting Real Madrid,” Casillas posted on Instagram. “I gave a press conference alone, a mistake, and I left. 5 years have passed since then. 5 years have passed since I reached the border that took me to our neighbouring country: Portugal.”
In the early hours of Sunday, Casillas posted his message followed by an image of himself from his final match for Madrid, a 7-3 win over Getafe on 23 May 2015.
“I wanted to be thinking something else again. To get a fresh climate, to give up being too urgently open and to trying to change,” he added. “Both players and friends want to improve. So, for that you have to develop both the physical and the emotional hand. This was necessary for the latter. I noticed that again in Porto.”
