Bayern Munich will not activate an option of €120 million ($130 million) to buy on-loan Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.
Chairman of the German champions Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Der Spiegel magazine on Friday, “We will now draw up internal squad planning (for next season) and we will see if he still has a role to play with us or not.”
The option to buy has expired, and Rummenigge said, “we haven’t activated it.”
Rummenigge also said the transfer market will see a tightening of the belts once the crisis has passed.
So much so it wouldn’t be an option to pay a club record fee for a player.
Coutinho joined Bayern last August but has not been able to shine consistently. Coutinho, who has eight goals and six assists his name, sat out the resumption of the season last weekend after ankle surgery in April.
Before the season was halted in March due to the coronavirus, he featured in 23 of 25 league games but only started 15 times.
