The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved Athletic and Real Sociedad to move the Copa del Ray Cup final to a time when the coronavirus will no longer be a threat. They proposed this delay so that fans may be allowed to come to the stadium.
Spain’s football season is expected to continue in June, but with matches without spectators in the stands, but both Cup finalists agree that they do not want to play such an important match in an empty stadium. But according to epidemiologists, viewers will only be allowed to return to stadiums in Spain next year.
“It is the most prestigious trophy in Spanish football, a competition with the highest tradition and therefore deserves a finale with spectators. Therefore, we will take all necessary steps to ensure that the finale is played at the best time, whether in 2020 or 2021, but certainly before the finals of the next Cup”, RFEF reported.
According to the original schedule, the Cup final was scheduled to be played on April 18 in Seville. But the coronavirus pandemic, which hit Spain especially hard, forced the RFEF to suspend all competitions as early as the first half of March.
Athletic of Bilbao and Real Sociedad of San Sebastian will meet for the first time in the Cup Finals this season and it will be the first Basque final in the history of this competition.
In Spain, more than 25,000 people have died from coronavirus so far.
