Former striker for Milan, Juventus, and Italy Alessandro Matri has announced his retirement from professional football.
“I can feel that I made my wishes come true.” the player told Sky Sport Italia. “I did not realize I would have had a career like that when I began, and then won three Scudetti.”
The forward started his career at Milan but from 2007-2011 made his name at Cagliari, scoring 36 goals in 127 appearances. He achieved success with Juve, earning three Serie A championships, but just one goal was a move back to Milan in 2015:
“I can’t complain about how it went because I’m at the road’s end now. During my first six months with Brescia I came up with this idea.
“I missed any feedback on the field and wasn’t feeling well. I no longer felt like playing football, and staying at a club where I can’t give what’s needed isn’t part of my character.”
Matri continued on loan playing for Fiorentina, Genoa and Lazio. At the international stage he represented Italy, netting once in 7 caps.
Matri experienced eight goalless games in the first half of the season during a loan spell at Brescia, and was released in January on a free transfer by Sassuolo.
